When to Wet Sand and When to Leave It Alone

Not every paint job needs wet sanding. A skilled painter with a properly set up HVLP gun can lay clear coat with minimal texture on a flat panel. But the reality of a busy collision shop is that dust nibs happen, orange peel varies, and some panels — hoods, roofs, deck lids — sit under direct light where even slight texture is visible.

Wet sanding is required when you have runs, sags, heavy orange peel, or dust contamination. It's optional when the clear has light texture that matches adjacent OEM panels. Know the difference before you pick up sandpaper — every pass removes material you can't put back.

Pre-Sanding Checks

Clear Coat Cure Time

Most 2K urethane clear coats need a minimum of 12–16 hours air dry at 70°F before wet sanding. If you bake at 140°F for 30 minutes, you can typically sand after a 2–4 hour cool-down. Check the TDS for your specific clear — cutting into uncured clear causes it to shrink later and pull the sand scratches open.

Film Build Check

Measure your clear coat thickness with a mil gauge before you sand. Most clear coats are applied at 2.0–3.0 mils (50–75 microns). You'll remove 0.3–0.5 mils during wet sanding and compounding combined. If you're below 2.0 mils total clear, you don't have enough material to safely sand — the repair needs to be re-cleared.

Grit Progression for Wet Sanding

Standard Progression: 1500 → 2000 → Compound

For moderate orange peel and minor nibs, start at 1500 grit wet. This is the most common starting point in production shops. Soak the paper (Sunmight Film 1500 or 3M Wetordry 1500) for 10 minutes minimum. Use a spray bottle to keep the surface flooded while sanding.

After 1500, step to 2000 grit to refine the scratch pattern. Each grit should remove the scratches from the previous grit — you'll see the haze become finer and more uniform. If you can still see individual 1500-grit scratches after 2000, you haven't spent enough time at 2000.

Heavy Defect Progression: 1000 → 1500 → 2000 → Compound

For runs, sags, or significant orange peel, start at 1000 grit wet. Block-sand the defect with a hard rubber block, checking progress frequently. Once the surface is level, switch to 1500 grit across the entire sanded area, then 2000.

Speed Progression with Trizact: 1500 → 3000 Trizact → Polish

3M Trizact 3000 discs on a DA sander produce such a consistent micro-scratch pattern that many shops skip the compound step entirely and go straight to a finishing polish. This saves 10–15 minutes per panel in a high-volume shop. Run the Trizact on a soft interface pad at 1,500–2,000 RPM with water mist.

Wet Sanding Technique

Block Selection

Use a hard rubber or firm foam block for flat surfaces — hoods, roofs, door skins. The block distributes pressure evenly and prevents your fingers from creating ripples. For curved areas like fender crowns and bumper transitions, use a softer foam pad that conforms to the radius without flattening it.

Sanding Pattern

Sand in straight, overlapping strokes — not circles. Alternate direction: sand north-south, then east-west with the next grit. This cross-hatch pattern ensures even material removal and prevents directional scratch patterns from surviving to the compounding step.

Use light pressure. Let the abrasive do the work. Heavy pressure concentrates material removal in a small area and increases burn-through risk. On a 12×12-inch area, 15–20 passes with 1500 grit is usually sufficient to flatten moderate texture.

Edge and Body Line Management

Clear coat is thinnest on edges, body lines, and crowns because paint flows away from high points during application. These are your highest-risk areas for burn-through. Tape off sharp edges with one layer of 3/4-inch masking tape to create a barrier. On body lines, sand parallel to the line — never across it.

If you see a color change (the haze becomes darker or shows a different hue), you've cut through the clear into basecoat. Stop immediately. The area needs to be re-cleared and re-sanded.

Compounding: From Haze to Gloss

Compound Selection

After wet sanding to 1500 or 2000 grit, you need a compound aggressive enough to remove the sand scratches in one or two passes without excessive heat. 3M Perfect-It Rubbing Compound (step 1) with a wool pad removes 1500-grit scratches efficiently. For a one-step approach from 2000 grit, a medium-cut compound on a foam cutting pad works well.

Machine Setup

Use a variable-speed rotary polisher or a dual-action polisher with a forced-rotation mode. Set speed to 1,200–1,800 RPM for compounding (rotary) or speed 4–5 on most DA polishers. Apply 4–5 pea-sized dots of compound to the pad and spread it across the panel at low speed before engaging full speed.

Work in 2×2-foot sections. Apply moderate pressure on the first pass to cut, then lighten pressure on the second pass to refine. Keep the pad flat — tilting concentrates heat and can burn through clear coat on edges.

Polishing: From Good to Perfect

After compounding, the surface should be glossy but may show light swirl marks or micro-marring from the cutting pad. Switch to a medium-cut polish (3M Perfect-It Machine Polish, step 2) on a soft foam pad at 1,200–1,500 RPM. Work in the same 2×2-foot sections.

For a final finishing pass, 3M Perfect-It Ultrafine Machine Polish (step 3) on a black ultra-soft pad removes the last traces of machine haze and produces a finish indistinguishable from factory. In most production shops, two steps (compound + polish) are sufficient — the third step is for show-car results or dark colors where swirls are most visible.

Common Wet Sanding Failures

Sand scratch show-through after polish: You didn't spend enough time at the intermediate grit, or you skipped a grit. Go back and re-sand with the finer grit, then re-compound. You can't polish out a 1000-grit scratch — the compound isn't aggressive enough.

Holograms after buffing: Caused by a dirty pad, too much speed, or too much pressure. Clean your pad every panel with a pad spur. Reduce RPM. Lighter pressure generates less heat and fewer micro-scratches.

Burn-through on edges: This is the most common wet-sanding mistake. Always tape edges, sand parallel to body lines, reduce pressure near crowns, and check mil thickness before you start. If you do burn through, feather-edge the area with 800 grit and re-clear — there is no other fix.
