What is a Safety Data Sheet?
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS), formerly known as a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), is a standardized document required by OSHA that provides detailed information about the potential hazards of a chemical product and how to work with it safely. Every product containing hazardous chemicals must have an SDS available to workers who may be exposed.
SDS Sections You Should Know
- Section 2 — Hazard Identification: GHS classification, signal words, hazard statements, and pictograms
- Section 4 — First Aid Measures: What to do in case of inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, or ingestion
- Section 7 — Handling and Storage: Precautions for safe handling, storage conditions, and incompatibilities
- Section 8 — Exposure Controls/PPE: Recommended personal protective equipment including respirator type, glove material, and eye protection
- Section 11 — Toxicological Information: Health effects from short-term and long-term exposure
OSHA Compliance Requirements
Under OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), employers must maintain SDS documents for every hazardous chemical in the workplace and ensure they are readily accessible to employees during their work shifts. Automotive refinish shops must have SDS documents available for all paints, solvents, adhesives, fillers, and cleaning chemicals used in the facility.
