How to Use a Long Board on Flat Panels

Why the Long Board Exists

A 6-inch DA sander sits on top of waves and rides over them. A 16- to 24-inch long board spans across waves and cuts only the peaks, progressively leveling the surface until the entire panel is flat. The math is simple: the longer the sanding tool, the larger the imperfection it can detect and correct. On hoods, roofs, door skins, and quarter panel flats — any surface the customer sees under direct sunlight — the long board is the only tool that produces a truly flat profile.

The long board doesn't replace the DA. It supplements it. Use the DA for fast material removal, then finish with the long board for flatness verification and leveling. The combination is faster than either tool alone.

Board Selection

Rigid Flat Boards

For dead-flat panels — hoods, roofs, deck lids — use a rigid, non-flexing flat board. Dura-Block AF44A (16-inch, flat profile) is the standard in most collision shops. Its aluminum core and rubber face provide the rigidity needed to bridge across low spots without conforming. For large surfaces like full hoods and roofs, a 24-inch file-style board covers more area per stroke and detects longer-wavelength waves that a shorter board misses.

Flexible Boards

Some panels have gentle crowns or compound curves that a rigid flat board can't follow. A flexible long board — one with a rubber face and no rigid core — bends to match the panel radius while still spanning across localized imperfections. Use flexible boards on gently crowned fenders, quarter panels with mild body-line curves, and door skins with slight convexity.

Don't confuse "flexible" with "soft." A flexible long board still has enough stiffness to bridge across dips. A soft pad or sponge block conforms to every imperfection and provides no leveling action — it just smooths the surface while preserving every wave underneath.

Abrasive Attachment

Long boards use either PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) sandpaper sheets or hook-and-loop attachment. PSA sheets sit perfectly flat on the board face — no air gaps, no lifting edges. Hook-and-loop allows faster abrasive changes but can develop edge lifting if the loop material wears. For flatness-critical work, PSA is the better choice because the abrasive is locked flush to the board face.

Cut sandpaper sheets to match the board width and length precisely. Overlapping or misaligned sheets create ridges on the board face that transfer as marks on the panel surface. Sunmight Gold sheets and 3M Gold Fre-Cut in standard 2-3/4 × 16-inch strips fit most Dura-Block boards without trimming.

Grip and Body Position

Hold the long board with both hands — one on each end. Your hands should exert equal pressure through the board, distributing sanding force evenly across the entire board face. Pressing harder with one hand tilts the board and creates a rocking motion that sands unevenly — one end cuts deeper than the other, producing a tapered surface instead of a flat one.

Stand facing the panel with the board oriented perpendicular to your body for horizontal strokes. Position your feet shoulder-width apart for stability. Your arms should move the board in long, smooth strokes using your shoulders — not your wrists. Wrist-driven strokes are short and choppy, which defeats the purpose of a long board. Shoulder-driven strokes span the full length of the board contact and maintain consistent pressure throughout the pass.

Stroke Technique

X-Pattern

The standard long-board pattern is the X-pattern (also called cross-hatch). Sand diagonally across the panel — upper-left to lower-right — for a set of passes, then switch to the opposite diagonal — upper-right to lower-left. This cross-hatching eliminates directional sanding marks and ensures material removal is uniform in all directions.

Each stroke should be long — at least 12 inches, and preferably the full length of the panel if your reach allows it. Short, scrubbing strokes turn the long board into a short block, reducing its leveling advantage. Long, smooth, gliding strokes let the board do what it was designed to do: bridge and cut.

Overlap

Overlap each stroke by 50% of the board width. If the board is 2-3/4 inches wide, each new stroke starts 1-3/8 inches from the previous one. Consistent overlap prevents striping — visible bands of more-sanded and less-sanded surface that show through paint as subtle texture variations.

Edge Treatment

When long-boarding near a body line, stop the board's travel 1–2 inches before the line. Long boards sand aggressively on edges because the pressure concentrates on the board's leading corner. This rounds body lines and crowns in a few careless strokes. Switch to a shorter hand block for the last 2 inches approaching any raised feature.

Using Guide Coat with the Long Board

Apply 3M Dry Guide Coat across the entire panel before boarding. The guide coat reveals three things: high spots (guide coat disappears first), low spots (guide coat remains), and scratch patterns from the previous grit (guide coat fills scratch valleys).

After 4–6 long-board passes, stop and read the guide coat pattern. If the guide coat is clearing evenly from the entire surface, you're flat. If it's clearing in patches with guide coat remaining between them, the patches are high spots — continue boarding until the pattern is uniform. If guide coat remains in a large, consistent area, that area is a low spot — don't chase it with more sanding. Re-prime the low area and re-board.

Grit Progression on the Long Board

For primer-surfacer blocking:

320 grit: First pass. Heavy cutting to level the primer surface. Apply guide coat, board with 320 in X-pattern until guide coat clears evenly. This is where you find and fix flatness issues.

400 grit: Second pass. Re-apply guide coat. Board with 400 to remove 320-grit scratches and refine the surface. The guide coat confirms all 320 scratches are removed — if guide coat remains in linear patterns, 320-grit scratches are still present. Continue at 400 until the pattern clears.

500 grit (optional): Third pass for premium finishes. Further refines the scratch pattern for sensitive basecoats — metallics, pearls, and dark colors where even 400-grit scratches can show through.

Common Long-Board Mistakes

Short strokes: Using the long board like a hand block — short, fast, scrubbing motions — negates its leveling advantage. Full-length, gliding strokes are slower but produce flat results. Short strokes produce smooth-looking surfaces that still have waves.

Uneven hand pressure: Pressing harder with the dominant hand is the most common long-boarding error. The board tilts, and one end cuts more than the other. Consciously equalize pressure between both hands. Some painters practice on scrap panels until even pressure becomes automatic.

Boarding across body lines: The board's rigid length bridges across a body line and sands the raised edge faster than the flat surfaces on either side. This rounds the body line in a few strokes. Stop short of body lines and finish with a short hand block oriented parallel to the line.

No guide coat: Boarding without guide coat is sanding blind. The board may feel like it's producing a flat surface, but without visual confirmation of high and low spots, you're relying on hand feel alone — which isn't reliable enough for surfaces viewed under sunlight. Apply guide coat before every grit change, no exceptions.
