What an SDS Is and Why OSHA Requires It
A Safety Data Sheet is a standardized document that describes the hazards, safe handling procedures, and emergency response measures for a chemical product. OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom 2012, aligned with GHS — the Globally Harmonized System) requires that every hazardous chemical in the workplace has an SDS available to every employee who may be exposed to it. In a collision shop, that includes every primer, hardener, reducer, filler, solvent, cleaner, seam sealer, and adhesive on the shelf.
The SDS isn't a formality. It's the document that tells you which respirator cartridge to use, what to do if the product splashes in your eyes, whether the product can catch fire at room temperature, and what happens to your lungs with repeated unprotected exposure. A shop that keeps SDS binders on the shelf but never opens them has documentation without protection.
The 16 Sections of an SDS
Section 1: Identification
Product name, manufacturer, recommended use, and emergency contact number. This section confirms you're looking at the right SDS for the product in your hand. Verify the product name and manufacturer match — generic product names (like "clear coat hardener") can apply to dozens of products with different hazard profiles.
Section 2: Hazard Identification
The most important section for daily use. It lists the hazard classification (flammable, health hazard, irritant, sensitizer), the GHS signal word (Danger or Warning), and the specific hazard statements. For a typical 2K clear coat hardener, you'll see hazard statements like "May cause respiratory sensitization" and "Causes serious eye damage." These aren't hypothetical — they're based on toxicological testing and real-world exposure data.
The pictograms in this section provide quick visual identification: the health hazard symbol (silhouette with starburst on chest) indicates sensitization or organ toxicity. The exclamation mark indicates irritation. The flame indicates flammability. Learn to recognize these symbols — they appear on product labels too.
Section 3: Composition / Ingredients
Lists the hazardous chemical components and their concentrations. For isocyanate-containing hardeners, this section identifies the specific isocyanate (HDI, MDI, or TDI) and its concentration. This information is what your occupational health physician needs if you develop respiratory symptoms — the specific isocyanate type determines the appropriate medical testing and diagnosis.
Section 4: First Aid Measures
What to do for each exposure route: inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, and ingestion. Read this section before you need it. When a hardener splashes in someone's eye, you need to know the first aid procedure immediately — not after a 5-minute search through a binder. Post the first aid measures from your most hazardous products (isocyanate hardeners, acid-based cleaners, strong solvents) at the mixing station and in the spray booth.
Key first aid information for isocyanate exposure: move to fresh air immediately, seek medical attention for any respiratory symptoms, and flush eyes with water for 15–20 minutes for eye contact. Do not induce vomiting for ingestion — the product can cause additional damage if it passes through the esophagus a second time.
Section 5: Firefighting Measures
Identifies appropriate fire extinguisher types, hazardous combustion products, and special firefighting precautions. Most automotive solvents and reducers are Class IB flammables (flash point below 73°F) — they ignite at room temperature from a spark, static discharge, or open flame. The SDS specifies whether to use dry chemical, CO2, or foam extinguisher. Post this information near the fire extinguisher in your mixing room and spray booth.
Section 6: Accidental Release Measures
Spill cleanup procedures. For solvent spills, the SDS typically specifies: eliminate ignition sources, ventilate the area, absorb with inert material (absorbent pads, vermiculite, or dry sand), and dispose as hazardous waste. For isocyanate spills, additional PPE requirements may apply — the SDS details what's needed.
Section 7: Handling and Storage
Storage temperature range, ventilation requirements, and incompatible materials. Isocyanate hardeners must be stored sealed to prevent moisture absorption — moisture reacts with isocyanate to form carbon dioxide gas, which pressurizes the container. Some products require storage below specific temperatures. Most automotive solvents require storage in flammable-rated cabinets with proper ventilation.
Section 8: Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
The PPE section. This tells you exactly what respiratory protection, glove type, eye protection, and body protection are required when handling the product. For isocyanate-containing products, the SDS specifies organic vapor/particulate cartridge respirators or supplied-air systems. For solvents, organic vapor cartridges. For acid-based products, acid gas cartridges. Don't guess at PPE — the SDS tells you precisely what's required.
This section also lists the Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) — the maximum airborne concentration allowed over an 8-hour shift (TWA — Time-Weighted Average) and the short-term exposure limit (STEL — typically a 15-minute peak). These numbers are what exposure monitoring compares against to determine if your shop's respiratory protection is adequate.
Sections 9–16: Technical and Regulatory Data
Physical and chemical properties (Section 9), stability and reactivity (Section 10), toxicological information (Section 11), ecological information (Section 12), disposal considerations (Section 13), transport information (Section 14), regulatory information (Section 15), and other information (Section 16). These sections are less frequently referenced in daily shop operations but are important for waste disposal compliance, shipping hazardous materials, and understanding long-term health effects from chronic exposure.
SDS Accessibility Requirements
OSHA requires that SDS documents be readily accessible to all employees during their work shift. "Readily accessible" means within reach — not in a locked office, not on a computer that requires a password, not in a binder that nobody can find. Options include: a physical binder at the mixing station and paint prep area, an electronic system accessible from a shop tablet or computer at each workstation, or both.
Every employee who works with or near hazardous chemicals must be trained on how to read an SDS and where to find them in the shop. This training is an OSHA HazCom requirement — document it with signed training records.
Practical SDS Use in the Shop
When opening a new product: Read Sections 2 (hazards) and 8 (PPE) before first use. Know what you're handling and how to protect yourself.
When selecting PPE: Check Section 8 for the specific respirator cartridge, glove material, and eye protection required. Nitrile gloves are standard for most automotive chemicals, but some products require butyl or neoprene gloves for adequate protection — the SDS specifies which.
When a spill occurs: Check Section 6 for cleanup procedures. Different products require different absorbents and disposal methods. Don't treat every spill the same way.
When someone is exposed: Check Section 4 for immediate first aid. Then call the emergency number in Section 1 or go to the nearest emergency room with the SDS in hand — the medical team needs to know what the patient was exposed to.
