How to Photograph Damage for Insurance Estimates

Why Photo Quality Matters

Insurance adjusters increasingly review damage through photos rather than in-person inspections. A photo-based estimate process means the adjuster's understanding of the damage is limited to what your photos show. If the photos are dark, blurry, taken from too far away, or miss an area of damage, the adjuster can't see it — and they can't approve repair for damage they can't verify. Every hour spent arguing over a supplement that could have been avoided with a clear photo is an hour of non-productive time.

Standardizing your damage photography — same angles, same lighting, same level of detail on every vehicle — produces consistent results, faster approvals, and fewer supplement disputes.

The Photo Set

Overview Shots (4 Photos)

Capture the entire vehicle from each corner — front-left, front-right, rear-left, rear-right. These shots establish the vehicle identity (make, model, color, VIN plate visible if possible) and show the damage location in context with the full vehicle. Stand 10–15 feet from the vehicle so the entire car fits in the frame. These photos orient the adjuster — "the damage is on the right front, here's where it starts and ends relative to the full vehicle."

Mid-Range Damage Shots (4–8 Photos)

Capture each damaged panel at mid-range — 4–6 feet from the damage. These shots show the extent and severity of each panel's damage: the dent depth, the crease lines, the paint damage perimeter, and the relationship between damaged panels. For a front-end collision affecting the bumper, fender, and hood, take separate mid-range shots of each damaged panel plus one shot showing how the damage spans across all three.

Close-Up Detail Shots (6–12 Photos)

Capture specific damage details at 12–24 inches: paint cracks and flaking, dent depth (include a finger or pen for depth reference), crease sharpness, headlight damage, gap misalignment, paint transfer from the other vehicle, and any mechanical damage visible (broken brackets, bent mounts, shifted components). These photos justify specific repair operations — a close-up of a creased body line supports "replace" instead of "repair" because the crease severity is clearly visible.

Measurement Photos (2–4 Photos)

Place a tape measure or ruler in the frame to show the scale of damage features: dent width, crack length, gap displacement, and misalignment distance. A photo of a 4-inch crease looks similar to a 12-inch crease without a reference scale. The measurement validates the repair scope — "this crease is 14 inches long across a body line, which is why the panel requires replacement rather than repair."

VIN and Data Plate Photo (1 Photo)

Photograph the VIN plate (visible through the windshield) and the vehicle data plate (door jamb) to confirm vehicle identification. This prevents identity disputes and ensures the estimate is written for the correct vehicle configuration.

Lighting

Photograph damage in bright, even lighting. Outdoor daylight produces the best results — natural light shows dent shadows, paint cracks, and surface irregularities that flash photography flattens. If outdoor photography isn't practical, use a well-lit shop bay with overhead lighting supplemented by a portable LED work light held at a low angle to create shadows that reveal dent depth and surface damage.

Avoid direct flash when possible. On-camera flash washes out detail and creates glare on metallic paint that obscures damage. If flash is necessary (dark shop, evening hours), use the phone's flash from an angle rather than straight-on — angled flash creates contrast that reveals damage shape.

Camera Settings and Quality

A modern smartphone camera produces adequate resolution for insurance photos — 12 megapixels or higher captures sufficient detail. Ensure the lens is clean (fingerprints on phone camera lenses are the most common cause of blurry photos), the image is in focus (tap on the damage area on the phone screen to set focus), and the exposure is correct (the damage area should be well-lit and visible, not silhouetted or washed out).

Take each photo in landscape orientation (horizontal) — it matches the format of estimate review software and provides more panel context than portrait (vertical) orientation. Hold the phone steady for 1 second after tapping the shutter to prevent motion blur.

Hidden Damage Documentation

After tear-down reveals hidden damage (structural deformation behind the bumper, cracked mounts hidden by trim, corrosion behind a panel), photograph the hidden damage immediately — before any repair work begins. These photos support the supplement request. Show: the hidden damage with a clear view of the defect, a reference photo showing the adjacent undamaged area for comparison, and a wide shot that shows the relationship between the hidden damage and the visible damage the adjuster already approved.

Label the photos with a description (written on a piece of masking tape placed in the frame, or added digitally after capture): "Cracked inner fender mount discovered after bumper removal" or "Structural rail kink — 15mm displacement at weld seam." The label tells the adjuster exactly what they're looking at without requiring them to interpret the photo.

Organizing Photos

Create a folder for each vehicle identified by the repair order number. Store photos in capture order — overview first, then mid-range, then detail, then hidden damage. When submitting to the insurer, include all photos in a single submission with a brief caption for each: "Overview — right front," "Close-up — fender crease at body line," "Hidden — inner mount crack after bumper removal." Organized submissions get reviewed faster than random photo dumps.

Common Photography Mistakes

Too far away: Overview shots are useful for context but don't justify repair operations. Every damage detail that supports a repair line on the estimate needs a close-up photo. If you can't see the crease, the crack, or the gap in the photo, the adjuster can't either.

Blurry photos: Motion blur from a shaky hand or out-of-focus shots from incorrect focus point are useless for estimate justification. Take an extra second to tap-focus and hold steady. Review each photo on the phone screen immediately after capture — retake any blurry shots while the vehicle is still in position.

No scale reference: A dent photo without a ruler or reference object provides no size context. The adjuster can't determine if the damage is 2 inches or 12 inches across. Include a tape measure, a pen, or a hand in close-up shots for scale.

Missing the hidden damage photos: Failing to photograph hidden damage before repair begins means the evidence is gone. Once you start repairing, the hidden damage is corrected and no longer available for documentation. Photo first, repair second — on every tear-down, every time.
