Why Wheel and Tire Masking Matters
Overspray on a tire sidewall is permanent — no solvent removes cured automotive paint from rubber without damaging the tire. Overspray on an alloy wheel face requires clay bar, solvent, and compound to remove — a 15–30 minute cleanup per wheel that's entirely preventable with 2 minutes of masking. And overspray inside the wheel well contaminates the fender liner, suspension components, and brake hardware, creating a visible tell that the vehicle was repainted.
Wheel masking should be the first step in your masking sequence — wheels are at floor level and collect fallout from every other masking step if left exposed.
Method 1: Pre-Formed Wheel Covers
Pre-formed plastic wheel covers (available from masking supply companies) are shaped to fit standard wheel and tire assemblies. They slip over the wheel and tire in one piece, are held in place by an elastic band or adhesive perimeter, and cover the entire assembly — tire, wheel face, and inner barrel — in 30 seconds per wheel.
Advantages
Speed: 30 seconds per wheel versus 5–8 minutes for tape-and-paper. Consistency: the entire assembly is covered with no gaps. Cost-effectiveness: reusable covers last 3–5 uses; disposable covers cost $2–5 each — less than the labor cost of manual masking.
Sizing
Wheel covers are sized by tire diameter: small (14–15 inch), medium (16–17 inch), large (18–19 inch), and extra-large (20+ inch). Stock two sizes that cover the most common wheel diameters in your shop's vehicle mix. Most shops find that medium and large covers handle 80% of vehicles.
Limitations
Pre-formed covers don't mask the fender lip or wheel well — these areas need separate masking with tape and paper. On vehicles with wide-offset wheels that extend beyond the fender lip, the cover may not fully protect the outer tire sidewall from overspray landing at an angle. Check coverage after installation and add tape to any exposed areas.
Method 2: Tape and Paper
For shops without pre-formed covers, or for wheels that don't fit standard covers (staggered fitments, aftermarket wheels with non-standard profiles), tape and paper is the manual alternative.
Step 1: Tape the Tire Sidewall
Apply 2-inch green tape around the tire sidewall at the fender lip, overlapping the tape onto the tire's outer sidewall by 2 inches. This defines the upper boundary of the wheel masking and protects the most visible portion of the tire.
Step 2: Paper the Wheel Face
Cover the wheel face with masking paper. For alloy wheels with complex spoke patterns, press the paper against the wheel face and tape the paper to the tire sidewall perimeter. For steel wheels with hub caps removed, a single sheet of paper covers the flat wheel face efficiently.
Step 3: Wrap the Lower Tire
Wrap masking paper around the lower portion of the tire assembly — the part visible below the fender. Tape the paper to the upper sidewall tape to create a complete wrap. The entire wheel and tire assembly should be covered with no rubber or alloy visible from any angle.
Step 4: Secure Loose Edges
Tape down any paper edges that could lift during booth airflow. Loose paper flapping in the booth airflow creates turbulence that can blow overspray under the paper and onto the wheel. A few extra strips of tape at the bottom of the wrap and at the paper seams prevents lift-off.
Fender Lip and Wheel Well Masking
Fender Lip
The fender lip — the rolled edge where the outer fender panel wraps under into the wheel well — defines the spray boundary for most fender and quarter panel repairs. Apply 3/4-inch green tape along the underside of the fender lip, with the tape's paint-side edge exactly at the lip's outer edge. This creates a clean paint boundary at the fender lip without overspray wrapping into the wheel well.
On vehicles where the fender lip is being painted (full fender respray), extend the tape 1 inch below the lip into the wheel well to define the paint stop point inside the well.
Wheel Well Interior
For full fender resprays and quarter panel replacements, mask the wheel well interior to protect the fender liner, suspension, brake components, and inner fender from overspray. Apply masking paper to the fender liner using tape along the fender lip, draping the paper inside the well to cover the liner surface. Tuck paper around brake lines, suspension arms, and any hardware visible inside the well.
On vehicles where the wheel well is being painted (inner fender or splash shield repairs), remove the fender liner (if it's a separate plastic piece) for full access to the inner fender surface. Mask the suspension and brake hardware individually with tape and paper.
Post-Spray Inspection
After painting and before unmasking the wheels, check for overspray on the tire sidewalls, wheel faces, and fender liner by lifting the masking material at one corner and inspecting underneath. Overspray that reached the wheel or tire despite masking is easiest to remove immediately — while it's still fresh and hasn't fully cured. Fresh overspray wipes off with a solvent-dampened cloth. Cured overspray requires clay bar, compound, or solvent soaking.
Special Situations
Full vehicle respray: All four wheel assemblies need complete masking. Pre-formed covers on all four wheels take 2 minutes total. Tape and paper on all four takes 20–30 minutes. For a full respray, the time savings of pre-formed covers is substantial.
Wheels removed: When wheels are removed for repair access or for separate wheel refinishing, mask the hub, brake rotor, and caliper with paper and tape to prevent overspray from contaminating brake surfaces. Overspray on brake rotors causes noise, reduced braking performance, and customer complaints.
Low-profile tires: Low-profile tires have minimal sidewall height, leaving the wheel rim more exposed to overspray. Pay extra attention to covering the rim lip and outer barrel — these are the areas most likely to catch overspray that angles past the fender lip.
