Blend Masking vs. Standard Masking
When you're respraying a full panel — edge to edge — masking is straightforward. Tape the panel gaps, cover the adjacent panels, and spray. When you're blending, the masking is more complex because you need to expose both the repair panel and the blend panel, manage the clear coat edge on the blend panel, and protect everything beyond the blend zone from overspray. Where you place your tape and what type you use at each location directly affects the quality of the finished blend.
Planning the Mask
Before you pull a single piece of tape, identify three zones on the vehicle:
Zone 1 — Repair panel: Full respray. This panel gets basecoat and clear coat over the entire surface. It needs to be fully exposed with no masking on its face.
Zone 2 — Blend panel(s): Partial coverage. Basecoat blends onto this panel, clear coat extends further. The entire panel needs to be scuffed and exposed for spraying. The far edge of the blend panel is where your clear coat fades out.
Zone 3 — Protected panels: Everything beyond the blend panel. These surfaces must be completely masked from all overspray — basecoat, clear coat, and blend solvent.
Step-by-Step Masking Procedure
Step 1: Clean the Entire Vehicle
Wipe down the full vehicle with wax-and-grease remover before taping anything. Tape doesn't adhere to dirty or wax-contaminated surfaces, and any contamination that migrates onto the repair area during masking causes defects in the paint. Pay attention to door handles, mirror bases, antenna areas, and body gaps where road grime accumulates.
Step 2: Scuff the Blend Panel
Before masking the blend panel, scuff its entire surface with 500–600 grit or gray Scotch-Brite. You can't scuff after masking because the tape covers panel edges. Kovax Super Assilex K800 on a DA covers the panel in 3–5 minutes. Include door edges, drip rails, and any surface within the blend zone that will receive clear coat.
Step 3: Mask the Far Edge of the Blend Panel
The far edge of the blend panel — the panel gap between the blend panel and the next panel beyond it — is where the clear coat stops. This is the most important masking edge on the entire vehicle because it determines whether the clear coat line is invisible or visible.
Apply 3M Soft Edge Foam Masking Tape along the panel gap at the far edge of the blend zone. The foam tape sits in the gap and creates a graduated clear coat edge instead of a hard line. When clear coat hits the foam edge, it tapers from full coverage to zero over a 1/4-inch transition, producing an edge that's invisible after cure. Hard masking tape at this location creates a step in the clear that requires compounding to feather.
Step 4: Mask the Panel Beyond the Blend
Starting at the foam tape edge, apply green masking tape (3M 233+) along the panel gap of the protected panel. Seal the tape to the foam tape with a 1/4-inch overlap. Then attach masking paper or plastic film to the green tape, covering the entire protected panel. Wrap the masking material around edges — under mirror bases, around door handles, inside trunk openings — anywhere overspray could reach.
Step 5: Mask the Vehicle Body (Non-Spray Side)
Cover the roof, hood, trunk, and all panels on the non-spray side with masking paper or plastic film. Overspray in a spray booth circulates — it doesn't just fall straight down. A panel on the opposite side of the vehicle that looks "far enough away" will catch a haze of overspray that's visible in sunlight. Mask everything that isn't being painted.
Step 6: Mask Panel Gaps Between Repair and Blend Panels
The gap between the repair panel and the blend panel doesn't need a hard edge — basecoat and clear coat will cover both panels across this gap. Use a strip of foam tape or leave the gap open. Don't tape a hard line here unless you specifically want a hard paint edge at the gap (which is rare in blending).
Step 7: Mask Glass, Trim, and Openings
Mask windshields, back glass, and side glass with tape and paper. Use aperture tape under glass moldings to protect the glass edge without removing the molding. Mask door handles by taping around the perimeter and stuffing paper into the handle opening. Mask headlights, taillights, antennas, and fuel doors.
Step 8: Back-Masking Door Jambs
If the repair panel is a door or fender and the jamb is already painted or doesn't need respraying, back-mask the jamb. Open the door, apply green tape along the inside edge of the door opening — the edge that faces the interior when the door is closed. Fold masking paper over this tape and tuck it into the door gap so the jamb is protected when the door is closed for spraying.
If the door jamb needs paint (common on full panel resprays), leave the jamb exposed and spray it first before closing the door and masking the interior edge.
Checking Your Mask Before Spraying
Walk around the vehicle at spray-gun distance (8–10 inches) and inspect every masking edge, every paper seam, and every gap. Look for:
Tape gaps: Any 1/4-inch gap between tape pieces lets overspray through. Seal every gap with an overlap piece.
Paper lifts: Masking paper that's pulled away from the tape edge creates a tunnel for overspray to reach the panel underneath. Re-tape any lifted areas.
Exposed surfaces: Under mirrors, inside fuel doors, around antenna mounts, inside wheel openings — these are frequently missed and frequently contaminated by overspray. If you can see paint surface, it needs covering.
Foam tape position: Verify the foam tape at the blend edge is positioned in the panel gap and not on the panel face. Foam tape on the face creates a visible texture line where the foam edge sits.
Unmasking After the Blend
Remove masking while the clear coat is still warm — 10–15 minutes after the bake cycle ends. Start at the blend edge and work outward. Pull the foam tape out of the panel gap slowly at a 45-degree angle. Pull green tape back at 45 degrees in a slow, steady motion. Don't yank — fast pulls on warm clear can lift the paint edge.
Inspect the blend edge after unmasking. A properly masked blend edge should be invisible — no hard line, no tape residue, no overspray on the protected panel. If a slight clear coat lip is visible at the foam tape line, a light compound and polish pass feathers it smooth. This is normal on some clears and takes 5 minutes to correct.
