What Booth Filters Do
A spray booth is a controlled environment — clean air in, contaminated air out. Intake filters clean incoming air before it reaches the vehicle, removing dust, pollen, insects, and shop debris that would become nibs in your paint. Exhaust filters capture overspray before it exits the booth, preventing paint-laden air from contaminating the shop exterior and violating air quality regulations. Both filter sets degrade over time, and both directly affect the quality of every paint job sprayed in the booth.
A booth with clean filters delivers 80–120 feet per minute (fpm) of air velocity across the vehicle. A booth with loaded filters delivers 40–60 fpm — half the design airflow. Reduced airflow means slower overspray evacuation, longer flash times, higher contamination risk, and inconsistent booth temperature during bake cycles. Changing filters on schedule is the single cheapest maintenance action that produces the largest quality improvement.
Filter Types and Locations
Intake Filters (Ceiling or Wall)
Intake filters sit between the air makeup unit (AMU) and the spray chamber. In a downdraft booth, they're mounted in the ceiling plenum — typically multiple panels that cover the full ceiling area. In a crossdraft booth, they're mounted in the intake wall. Intake filters are usually high-efficiency synthetic media rated to capture particles down to 10–20 microns.
Some booths use a two-stage intake system: a pre-filter (coarser media) that captures large particles, followed by a fine filter that captures smaller contaminants. The pre-filter extends the life of the fine filter by preventing large debris from loading the expensive fine media.
Exhaust Filters (Floor or Rear Wall)
Exhaust filters capture overspray from the spray process. In a downdraft booth, they sit in the floor pit beneath the grate. In a crossdraft booth, they're in the exhaust wall. Exhaust filters are typically fiberglass or polyester mat media — less expensive than intake filters because they capture paint particles (relatively large) rather than fine atmospheric dust.
Exhaust filters load faster than intake filters because they capture paint overspray — thick, sticky material that clogs the media rapidly. A busy shop spraying 5+ vehicles per day may need to change exhaust filters every 1–2 weeks, while intake filters last 3–6 months.
Paint Arrestor Pads
Some booths use replaceable paint arrestor pads — multi-layer fiberglass or cardboard baffles — as the primary exhaust filter media. These pads are designed to load progressively, with the front layers catching heavy overspray and the rear layers catching fine mist. When the front layer is saturated (visible paint buildup covering 70%+ of the surface), replace the pad.
When to Change Filters
Intake Filters
Visual check: Hold a new filter next to the installed filter. If the installed filter is visibly darker — gray, brown, or discolored compared to the white new filter — it's loaded. Discoloration that's uniform across the filter surface indicates normal loading. Discoloration concentrated in one area indicates a seal leak where unfiltered air is bypassing the filter (fix the seal before installing a new filter).
Pressure drop test: The most accurate method. Measure the static pressure drop across the intake filter bank with a manometer (differential pressure gauge). New filters typically show 0.05–0.10 inches of water column (in. w.c.) pressure drop. When the pressure drop reaches 0.5 in. w.c., the filters are restricting airflow significantly and should be replaced. Most booth manufacturers specify a maximum allowable pressure drop in the maintenance manual.
Time-based schedule: In the absence of pressure measurement, replace intake filters every 3–6 months in a production shop (5+ vehicles/day) or every 6–12 months in a low-volume shop (1–2 vehicles/day). If the shop environment is particularly dusty (desert region, unpaved lot, adjacent to grinding operations), shorten the interval.
Exhaust Filters
Visual check: When the exhaust filter surface is 70%+ covered with paint buildup, airflow is significantly restricted. For fiberglass pad filters, the front face should still show some visible media texture. When it looks like a solid painted surface, it's done.
Airflow feel: Stand at the booth intake with the booth running in spray mode. You should feel steady air movement across the vehicle. If the airflow feels sluggish, weak, or uneven — and the intake filters are clean — the exhaust filters are loaded. This is the most common cause of "my booth feels slow" complaints.
Time-based schedule: In a 5-vehicle-per-day shop, change exhaust filters every 1–2 weeks. In a high-volume production facility, weekly changes are standard. Exhaust filter cost per change is low ($15–50 per set for most booths), and the airflow improvement is immediate.
Filter Change Procedure
Intake Filter Replacement
Step 1: Turn off the booth AMU and exhaust fan. You don't want the booth pulling unfiltered air while the filter panels are removed.
Step 2: Open the ceiling plenum access panels (downdraft) or remove the intake wall filter frames (crossdraft). Carefully pull the loaded filters out — they're full of captured contaminants that can dislodge and fall into the booth if handled roughly.
Step 3: Inspect the plenum or filter housing for debris, standing water, or damaged seals. Clean the housing with a damp cloth. Replace any worn or torn gasket material that seals the filter frames to the housing — gaps in the seal allow unfiltered air to bypass the filters entirely, sending contaminants directly into the spray chamber.
Step 4: Install new filters with the airflow direction arrow pointing into the booth (toward the vehicle). Filters are directional — the upstream face is designed to capture particles while the downstream face provides smooth airflow. Installing backward reduces capture efficiency.
Step 5: Close the plenum access panels, verify all filter frames are seated and sealed, and restart the booth. Run in spray mode for 5 minutes to purge any debris dislodged during the change.
Exhaust Filter Replacement
Step 1: Turn off the booth. For floor-mounted exhaust filters (downdraft), lift the floor grate sections to access the filter pit. For wall-mounted filters (crossdraft), open the exhaust access panels.
Step 2: Remove the loaded exhaust filters. These are heavy with trapped paint — handle them carefully to avoid crumbling dried paint into the pit or onto the booth floor.
Step 3: Clean the exhaust pit or housing. Remove any accumulated paint chips, debris, or standing water. In downdraft booths, the exhaust pit can accumulate water from condensation and booth washing — standing water restricts airflow through the floor grate.
Step 4: Install new exhaust filter media. For pad-type filters, layer them per the manufacturer's specification (some systems use multiple layers of different media densities). For roll-type filters, cut to fit and secure with the retention clips or grate.
Step 5: Replace the floor grate (downdraft) or close the exhaust access panels. Restart the booth and verify airflow by feeling the air velocity at the intake and at floor level.
After the Change: Verify Airflow
After replacing filters, verify booth airflow with a handheld anemometer if available. Measure air velocity at four points across the booth at vehicle-panel height. A properly functioning downdraft booth should read 80–120 fpm at each point with less than 20% variation between readings. Significant variation indicates a seal leak, a misaligned filter, or an AMU problem.
Without an anemometer, hold a strip of light masking paper at arm's length in the booth with the system running. The paper should deflect consistently in the direction of airflow — straight down in a downdraft, horizontal in a crossdraft. If the paper hangs limp or flutters erratically, airflow is inadequate.
Filter Quality Matters
Economy filters cost less per panel but capture less contamination, load faster, and need more frequent replacement. Premium intake filters (higher MERV rating) capture finer particles, last longer, and provide better paint quality. For a shop where each paint job is worth $500–3,000 in labor and materials, saving $20 on a filter that lets a dust nib through doesn't make economic sense. Specify booth filters from the booth manufacturer or a reputable filter supplier at the OEM-specified media grade.
