Eye Hazards in the Body Shop
Auto body technicians face four categories of eye hazard daily: high-velocity particles from grinding, cutting, and sanding; chemical splash from solvents, hardeners, and cleaners; airborne mist from spray painting; and UV/IR radiation from welding. Each hazard requires a different level of protection — safety glasses that stop a grinding spark don't stop a chemical splash, and goggles that stop a splash don't stop welding radiation.
OSHA Standard 1910.133 requires eye and face protection for any worker exposed to flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids, caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, or potentially injurious light radiation. In a collision shop, that covers nearly every task.

Safety Glasses
ANSI Z87.1-rated safety glasses are the baseline eye protection for all body shop work. The Z87.1 rating means the lenses and frames have passed impact testing — they'll stop a 1/4-inch steel ball fired at the lens at specified velocity without penetrating. Every pair of safety glasses in the shop should carry the Z87.1 marking on the lens and the frame.
Side shields are mandatory for body shop use. Standard safety glasses without side shields leave a gap between the lens edge and the temple area where particles can enter from the side — exactly the trajectory of grinding sparks and sanding debris that deflect off the workpiece laterally. Wraparound frames or clip-on side shields close this gap.
Safety glasses protect against flying particles and moderate dust. They do not protect against chemical splash — liquids can enter around the lens perimeter because safety glasses don't seal against the face. For chemical handling and spray painting, upgrade to goggles or a full-face respirator.
Chemical Splash Goggles
Indirect-vent chemical splash goggles seal against the face around the entire eye perimeter. The seal prevents liquid chemicals from entering the eye area from any direction — front, side, top, or bottom. Indirect ventilation (small baffled vents that allow air circulation but block liquid splash) prevents fogging while maintaining the splash barrier.
Use splash goggles when mixing hardeners, pouring solvents, handling acid-based cleaners, or performing any task where liquid chemicals could splash toward the face. Isocyanate hardener in the eyes causes severe chemical burns that require immediate irrigation and emergency medical treatment — goggles prevent the exposure entirely.
Full-Face Respirators as Eye Protection
Full-face air-purifying respirators (APRs) combine respiratory protection with eye protection in a single facepiece. The clear visor covers the eyes, nose, and mouth, and the seal against the face prevents both chemical vapors and liquid splash from reaching the eyes or lungs. For spray painting — where both respiratory and eye protection are required simultaneously — a full-face respirator is the most practical solution.
The advantage over separate goggles + half-face respirator: one device instead of two, no compatibility issues between goggle straps and respirator straps, wider field of vision, and a more comfortable fit for extended wear. The disadvantage: higher cost ($150–400 vs. $30–80 for a half-face + goggles), visor fogging in hot and humid conditions, and the weight and bulk of the full facepiece.
Welding Eye Protection
MIG welding arcs produce intense UV and visible light radiation that causes arc eye (photokeratitis — essentially a sunburn on the cornea) within seconds of unprotected viewing. A welding helmet with a shade 10–12 lens (for MIG on body panel steel at typical amperage) is mandatory during welding. Auto-darkening helmets switch from clear to shade in 1/25,000th of a second when the arc initiates — they allow the welder to see the workpiece before striking the arc and transition to protection instantaneously.
Bystanders within 10 feet of a welding arc also need protection — reflected UV from the workpiece and surrounding surfaces can cause arc eye even without direct viewing. Welding screens or curtains around the welding area protect adjacent workers. At minimum, bystanders should wear safety glasses with shade 2 or shade 3 lenses (lightly tinted) to reduce reflected UV exposure.
Prescription Eyewear
Workers who wear prescription glasses need either prescription safety glasses (with Z87.1-rated frames and lenses in their prescription) or over-the-glasses (OTG) safety glasses that fit over standard prescription frames. Standard prescription glasses — even polycarbonate lenses — are not Z87.1 rated and do not provide adequate impact protection against grinding debris.
Prescription safety glasses cost $100–300 depending on the prescription and frame selection. OTG safety glasses cost $10–20 and fit over most standard prescription frames. Both options meet OSHA requirements. For full-time body shop workers who wear prescription glasses, investing in prescription safety glasses provides better fit, comfort, and optical quality than OTG alternatives.
Maintaining Eye Protection
Scratched lenses reduce visibility and can weaken the lens's impact resistance. Clean safety glasses daily with lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth — not shop rags, which contain abrasive particles that scratch lenses. Replace safety glasses when lenses become scratched enough to impair vision or when frames are bent, cracked, or loose.
Full-face respirator visors scratch more easily than safety glasses because the visor material (polycarbonate or polyester) is softer. Use the manufacturer's recommended cleaning solution and peel-off visor covers (disposable transparent films that protect the visor surface during use — when the cover is scratched, peel it off and apply a fresh one).
Shop Eye Protection Policy
Safety glasses should be mandatory in all production areas of the shop — body work, prep, paint, and detail. The simplest and most enforceable policy: safety glasses on when you enter the production floor, off when you leave. Workers who say "I'm just walking through" are 10 feet from a grinder that can throw a spark 15 feet. Universal eye protection in the production area eliminates the judgment call about when protection is and isn't needed.
Provide a dispenser of disposable safety glasses at each shop entrance for visitors, delivery drivers, and anyone else who enters the production floor without their own eye protection. The cost is negligible; the liability protection is significant.
