Spill Response Priorities

When a chemical spill occurs, respond in this order: protect people (evacuate if necessary, prevent exposure), eliminate ignition sources (for flammable spills), contain the spill (prevent it from spreading), absorb and clean up, and dispose properly. Speed matters — a gallon of lacquer thinner on the floor produces flammable vapors that reach ignition concentration within minutes. But safety matters more than speed — don't rush into a spill without appropriate PPE.

Solvent and Reducer Spills (Flammable Liquids)

Immediate Actions

1. Eliminate ignition sources: Immediately turn off all electrical equipment in the area — grinders, sanders, welders, lights with non-rated switches. Don't flip light switches if you're standing in vapor — the switch contact can spark. If equipment has emergency shutoffs, use them. Extinguish any open flames. Stop any hot work (welding, cutting) within 20 feet.

2. Ventilate: Open doors and windows. Turn on exhaust fans. Flammable vapors are heavier than air and pool at floor level — ventilation must move air at floor level, not just at ceiling height. If the mixing room exhaust fan is rated for flammable environments, turn it on. If it's not rated, don't energize it — the motor can spark.

3. Protect yourself: Don nitrile gloves (8-mil minimum) and chemical splash goggles before approaching the spill. If the solvent is a respiratory hazard (check the SDS — most are), wear an OV respirator. If the spill is large (more than 1 gallon) and in an enclosed space, consider evacuating and calling professional hazmat response.

4. Contain: Place absorbent dams (absorbent socks or pillows) around the perimeter of the spill to prevent it from spreading to drains, doorways, or adjacent work areas. Don't push the spill — contain it where it is.

5. Absorb: Cover the contained spill with absorbent material — absorbent pads, absorbent granules (clay-based or polypropylene), or vermiculite. Let the absorbent soak up the liquid. Don't use paper towels or shop rags — they don't absorb flammable liquids efficiently and become fire hazards themselves.

6. Collect and dispose: Scoop the saturated absorbent into a sealable metal or plastic container (provided in spill kits). Seal the container. Label it as hazardous waste. Store it in the hazardous waste accumulation area. Dispose through your hazardous waste hauler — don't put it in the regular trash.

Isocyanate Spills (Hardener)

Isocyanate hardener spills are both a respiratory hazard and a skin-contact hazard. The response is similar to solvent spills with additional respiratory precautions.

1. Clear the area: Isocyanate vapor concentration near a spill can exceed the PEL rapidly. Anyone without respiratory protection should leave the area immediately.

2. PPE up: OV/P100 respirator (minimum — PAPR is better for large spills), chemical splash goggles, nitrile gloves (8-mil), and coveralls that cover all exposed skin. Isocyanate absorbs through skin contact — the spill cleanup person needs full-body protection.

3. Ventilate: Maximize airflow through the area. Open doors and windows. Run exhaust fans.

4. Contain and absorb: Same as solvent spills — dam, absorb, collect. Some isocyanate products react with water to form CO2 gas — check the SDS before using water-based neutralizers. Most spill kits for isocyanates include specific neutralizing agents that deactivate the isocyanate chemistry.

5. Dispose as hazardous waste: Isocyanate-contaminated absorbent is hazardous waste — label, store, and dispose per regulations.

Acid-Based Product Spills

Acid-based products in body shops include some metal conditioners, rust treatments (phosphoric acid), and certain cleaning compounds. Acid spills cause chemical burns on skin contact and release irritating or corrosive fumes.

Response: Wear chemical-resistant gloves (neoprene or butyl — check the SDS for the specific acid), splash goggles, and a respirator with acid gas cartridges if fumes are noticeable. Neutralize the acid with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) spread over the spill — it fizzes as it neutralizes. Once fizzing stops, absorb the neutralized liquid with absorbent pads and dispose as hazardous waste.

Never mix acid spills with solvent spills — the combination can produce toxic gases or violent reactions depending on the specific chemicals involved.

When to Evacuate

Evacuate the building and call 911 if: the spill is too large for your spill kit to handle (more than 5 gallons of flammable liquid), fire has ignited from a flammable spill, anyone is injured or showing symptoms of chemical exposure (difficulty breathing, burns, dizziness), the spill involves an unknown chemical, or the spill has reached a drain or waterway.

Designate an assembly point outside the building where employees gather after evacuation. Conduct a headcount to verify everyone is out. Don't re-enter the building until emergency responders clear it.

Spill Kit Contents

Maintain a spill kit at every location where chemicals are stored or handled — mixing room, gun cleaning station, solvent dispensing area, and the spray booth. A basic body shop spill kit contains:

10–20 absorbent pads (oil and chemical rated), 2–4 absorbent socks (for damming perimeter), 2 lbs absorbent granules, 2 pairs nitrile gloves (8-mil), 1 pair chemical splash goggles, 2 sealable disposal bags or a small disposal container, and instructions for spill response specific to the chemicals in your shop. Store the kit in a clearly labeled, easily accessible container — not buried under parts or locked in a closet. When you need a spill kit, you need it in 30 seconds, not 5 minutes.

Reporting Requirements

Under EPA regulations, spills of hazardous substances that exceed reportable quantities (RQ) must be reported to the National Response Center (1-800-424-8802). Reportable quantities vary by substance — for common body shop chemicals, the RQ is typically 100–5,000 lbs (far more than most shop spills). However, any spill that reaches a drain, waterway, or soil may trigger state-level reporting requirements at lower quantities. Know your state's reporting thresholds before a spill happens — the reporting deadline is typically 24 hours or less.

Post-Spill Actions

After cleanup: investigate what caused the spill (knocked-over container, overfilling, damaged container, improper storage), implement corrective measures (secure storage, smaller containers, spill trays under dispensing areas), replace used spill kit materials immediately (the kit is useless empty), and document the incident — what spilled, how much, what was done, and what corrective action was taken. This documentation demonstrates due diligence if the incident is later investigated by an inspector.
