What PPS Does for Your Workflow

The 3M Paint Preparation System (PPS) Series 2.0 replaces the traditional metal or plastic gravity cup on your spray gun with a disposable liner-and-lid system. You mix paint in the PPS liner, snap on the lid with a built-in filter, twist it onto the gun adapter, and spray. When you're done, toss the liner and lid — no cup cleaning. Load the next liner with the next color and keep spraying.

In a production collision shop spraying 8–12 colors per day, PPS saves 30–60 minutes of daily gun cleaning time. That's 2.5–5 hours per week of productive booth time recovered from washing cups between colors. The cost of disposable liners and lids is offset within the first week by the labor savings alone.

PPS Series 2.0 Components

Adapter

The adapter is a permanent ring that threads onto your spray gun in place of the standard cup collar. Each gun brand requires a specific adapter — SATA, DeVilbiss, Iwata, Binks, and others each have a different thread pattern. The adapter is a one-time purchase that stays on the gun permanently. Once installed, PPS liners snap in and out with a quarter-turn lock.

3M provides an adapter fitting guide that matches adapter part numbers to specific gun models. Verify the correct adapter for your gun before purchasing — the wrong adapter won't thread properly or won't seal, causing air leaks and drips during spraying.

Lids

PPS lids serve three functions: they seal the liner, they include a built-in 200-micron paint strainer, and they create the pressure seal that allows spraying at any angle. Lids come in two sizes:

Lids also come with different filter micron ratings — 125 micron for standard coatings and 200 micron for thicker materials like primer-surfacer. The standard 200-micron filter works for most applications. Use the finer 125-micron filter for basecoats where maximum contamination control matters.

Liners

Liners are the disposable cups. They're flexible, graduated plastic bags with mixing ratio markings printed on the side. Pour in your paint components to the marked ratios, snap on the lid, and the paint is mixed, strained, and ready to spray. The graduated markings match common ratios: 4:1, 3:1, 2:1, and others.

Liners come in the same size families as lids (standard/large and mini). Always match the liner size to the lid size — a mini liner won't seal properly in a standard lid.

Setting Up PPS on Your Gun

Step 1: Install the Adapter

Remove the existing cup or cup collar from your spray gun. Thread the PPS adapter onto the gun body by hand until snug, then tighten 1/4 turn with a wrench. Don't over-tighten — the adapter seals with an o-ring that compresses with moderate torque. Over-tightening crushes the o-ring and creates a leak.

Step 2: Prepare the Liner

Open a PPS liner and place it in the outer cup (hard plastic shell that provides structural support). The outer cup is reusable — it holds the flexible liner in shape during mixing and spraying. Pour the base paint component into the liner to the appropriate mark. Add hardener (and reducer if required) to the matching ratio mark. Stir with a mixing stick for 15–20 seconds.

Step 3: Install the Lid

Place the PPS lid on top of the liner, aligning the locking tabs. Press down and twist clockwise until it clicks — the lid seals the liner and the built-in filter sits inside the paint. The filter strains the mixed paint as it flows through during spraying, catching any contaminants or unmixed solids.

Step 4: Mount to Gun

Invert the assembled cup-and-lid, align the lid with the adapter on the gun, and twist clockwise until it locks. The PPS system seals with a bayonet lock — you'll feel a positive click when it's secured. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it's locked. A loose connection causes paint to drip from the seal during spraying.

Step 5: Spray

Spray normally. The PPS liner collapses as paint is drawn out — no air vent is needed because the collapsing liner replaces the air that would normally enter through a vented cup. This means you can spray at any angle — upside down, sideways, tilted — without air entering the paint stream. This is a significant advantage for spraying underneath bumper returns, inside wheel wells, and on any surface where a traditional gravity cup would leak.

Mixing in PPS Liners

The graduated markings on PPS liners make ratio mixing fast and accurate. For a 4:1 mix (paint to hardener), pour paint to the "4" mark, then add hardener to the "1" mark above it. The scale accounts for both components — the hardener line is set at the correct volume above the paint fill level.

For colors that require specific tinting or custom ratios not marked on the liner, use a separate mixing cup for precision measuring, then pour the mixed paint into the PPS liner. The liner's built-in filter strains the pre-mixed material as it enters the paint stream.

PPS for Color Changes

The biggest workflow advantage of PPS is color changeover speed. Without PPS, changing from one basecoat color to another requires: draining the cup, flushing with solvent (two rinses), wiping the cup interior, and sometimes disassembling the lid for cleaning. Total: 5–8 minutes per color change.

With PPS: remove the used liner-and-lid assembly (quarter-turn, lift off), drop in a new liner with the next color, snap on a new lid, twist onto the gun. Total: 30–60 seconds per color change. In a shop spraying 10 different colors in a day, that's 50–80 minutes saved — every day.

Between similar colors (silver to gray, for example), many painters don't even flush the gun passages between PPS changes — the small amount of residual paint in the fluid tip and passages is overwhelmed by the new color within the first half-second of spraying. Between drastically different colors (black to white), a quick solvent flush through the passages (without cleaning the cup, which doesn't exist) takes 30 seconds.

PPS for Storage

Mixed paint in a sealed PPS liner can be stored for hours or even overnight for single-component (1K) materials. For catalyzed (2K) materials, pot life still applies — once hardener is added, the material has a limited working life regardless of container. But for basecoat colors that you mix in the morning and spray in the afternoon, a sealed PPS liner with the unused paint sitting on the bench keeps the material strained, sealed, and ready to reload instantly.

Label every stored liner with the color code and mix date. Unlabeled liners become mystery colors that waste time and material when you open them a week later and can't identify the contents.

Common PPS Mistakes

Wrong adapter for the gun: Each gun brand and sometimes each model requires a specific adapter. Using a SATA adapter on a DeVilbiss gun cross-threads the connection and damages both components. Verify adapter compatibility before purchasing.

Not locking the lid fully: A partially locked lid leaks during spraying — paint drips from the seal, contaminating the panel and wasting material. Twist until you feel the positive click, then confirm with a tug test.

Reusing liners: PPS liners are designed for single use. Reusing a liner with dried paint residue contaminates the next batch with flakes and chunks that the filter may not catch. The cost per liner is $1–2 — far less than the cost of a contaminated paint job.

Overfilling the liner: Fill to no more than 80% capacity to allow room for the lid and filter to sit inside the paint without overflowing. Overfilled liners push paint out of the seal when the lid is pressed down.

Forgetting to strain with non-PPS cups: If you ever go back to a traditional cup, you've lost the built-in strainer that PPS provides. Remember to use a separate paint strainer funnel every time you pour paint into a non-PPS cup.
